A Windhoek neighbourhood landmark has quietly closed its doors. The Louis Botha convenience store, a fixture in the suburb for decades, stopped operating weeks ago, leaving residents and students from the nearby Namibian University of Science and Technology mourning its absence.

Known for its ready-made meals, hot potato chips, and everyday groceries, the shop had become a daily ritual for many. "They even knew me by name," said one regular customer who ate there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Owner Silvanus Hauwanga has declined to explain the closure. Some locals suspect rising competition from newer nearby businesses may have played a role, but the full story remains unclear.

Namibia is making cricket history this August and September, hosting a T20 International triangular series against South Africa and Zimbabwe in Windhoek - the first time the nation has staged a multi-nation T20 series featuring full-strength regional rivals on home soil.

Bank Windhoek has made capital market history in Namibia by becoming the first financial institution to convert a listed corporate bond from a physical certificate into a secure electronic record within the country's new Central Securities Depository (CSD).

The transaction involved the bank's N$250.5 million Sustainability-Linked Bond, with the entire dematerialisation completed in a single day. The CSD itself was launched in December 2025 by the Namibian Stock Exchange, in partnership with the Bank of Namibia.

Managing Director James Chapman called the move a milestone in Namibia's financial modernisation, citing benefits including faster settlements, reduced fraud risk, and simpler interest payments. The bank plans to dematerialise its three remaining listed bonds by September 2026.

Namibian entrepreneurs are being urged to think bigger - much bigger. At a recent digital entrepreneurship breakfast in Oshakati hosted by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia, Deputy Minister of Education Dino Ballotti challenged local business owners to stop limiting themselves to Namibia's roughly three million residents.

He pointed to neighbouring markets like Angola and South Africa, with populations of 40 million and 65 million respectively, as untapped opportunities reachable through digital platforms and AI tools. "Your target market is not necessarily the person that lives next to you," he said.

CRAN also announced plans for a regulatory sandbox, letting entrepreneurs test digital products in a controlled environment before launching more broadly - a step toward turning connectivity into real economic opportunity.
