Windhoek's new heavy vehicle permit system is rattling the trucking industry - and raising doubts about whether the city can even manage it.

Starting in September, all vehicles over nine tonnes must obtain a permit to enter Windhoek for deliveries or other authorised purposes. The City says the move is needed to ease congestion and protect roads worn down by through-traffic that could instead use bypass routes.

But fuel transporters warn the costs - potentially millions of Namibian dollars per year per company - are unaffordable, and that higher prices will likely be passed on to consumers. One bulk fuel director questioned whether the municipality could realistically process up to 1,000 permits a month.

The City says permits lasting up to 12 months will be available, and September has been designated a public awareness period before enforcement begins.

Namibia has taken a major step onto the world stage of artificial intelligence, joining the newly launched AI for Good Global Commission, co-chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

ICT minister Emma Theofelus announced the move at the launch of the National ICT Summit, emphasizing Namibia's need to take an active role in shaping global AI governance and harnessing technology for national development.

Windhoek’s efforts to upgrade its public transport and promote eco-friendly travel have hit a setback as the German government withdrew a N$200-million grant for the city’s sustainable urban mobility project.
