One of Namibia's most cherished annual traditions has returned, as the Windhoek Showgrounds plays host to the 72nd Windhoek Agricultural Show - five days of agriculture, trade, and community celebration.

This year's edition arrives with a significantly expanded funfair section, offering a wider and more thrilling lineup of rides alongside nearly 200 packed exhibition stalls representing businesses, farmers, and craftspeople from across Namibia and beyond.

International interest has grown notably, with companies from neighbouring countries using the show to explore trade networks and connect with Namibian retailers.

The agricultural section remains the show's beating heart, offering breeders and farmers a rare national platform for serious business - while private sector participation is said to have reached a new high.

Weekend crowds are expected to exceed 45 000 visitors. Gates open daily from 10h00 to 23h00, with adult tickets at N$50, children at N$30, and free entry for pensioners and young children.

“The expanded funfair better have something new this time. Last year the rides were the same as always.”

A partial rollback of foot-and-mouth disease restrictions is bringing cautious relief to Windhoek's agricultural community, weeks after the outbreak nearly paralysed the city's meat supply chain.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform confirmed the easing follows intensive tracing that contained the disease to the ||Kharas region - where Namibia's first confirmed FMD case since independence was detected at a commercial farm in the Karasburg Veterinary District.

Cattle traced to Otjozondjupa before the outbreak tested negative and have since been cleared, allowing authorities to lift movement restrictions for all areas north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence.

Raw meat at registered abattoirs and cold-storage facilities south of the redline - excluding ||Kharas - may now move with proper documentation. Fodder commodities and feedlot livestock destined for slaughter are also permitted under veterinary oversight.

International beef exports and livestock auctions remain suspended as surveillance in ||Kharas continues.

Windhoek is making public transport free this Saturday as part of Zero Emission Week, with the City of Windhoek opening its municipal bus network to all passengers at no cost.

The initiative marks Public Transport Awareness Day, encouraging residents to ditch their cars for a morning and experience greener commuting firsthand.

Hop-on, hop-off rides will run from 09h00 to 13h00, covering key routes including the central business district, Khomas Grove Mall, and Grove Mall.

Commuters can also expect complimentary gifts from city team members on the day.

Behind the festivities lies a serious intent - the city is preparing to pilot low-carbon buses under its eMobility Windhoek Initiative, backed by the Development Bank of Namibia, with electric and hybrid fleet expansion potentially funded through the Green Climate Fund.

Zero Emission Week also features a car-free day, electric vehicle showcases, and an environmental video competition - one of Windhoek's most ambitious sustainability campaigns yet.

Building plan approvals in Windhoek fell sharply in August, with just 135 plans approved at a combined value of N$161.9 million.

That marks a 41% drop in volume from July and a 16.7% decline year-on-year, while approval values shrank by 20.3% month-on-month and 24.1% compared to the same period last year.

Property additions bore the brunt of the slowdown, with 94 approvals valued at N$40.7 million — down nearly 47% in number and 44.6% in value from July.

Residential approvals slipped to 35 units worth N$92.2 million, while commercial and industrial plans totalled just six, with values falling 46.9% year-on-year.

Completions were equally subdued - only 17 buildings finished, valued at N$21.3 million, with no commercial or industrial projects completed across the entire six-month stretch to August.

Analysts say recovery will depend on sustained economic stability and renewed investor confidence across all property categories.

“Property additions being the hardest hit category makes sense. When money is tight people stop extending their houses first.”

When the Lüderitz Junior Council visited Windhoek, it marked more than an exchange - it signalled that youth governance in Namibia is gaining real momentum.

Junior Mayor Kovi Kambai made the challenge clear: representation alone is not enough.

Young people must convert their presence into lasting impact for their communities.

The City of Windhoek Junior Council - active since 1999 - continues to build leadership among Grade 11 learners from across the Khomas Region.

The delegation explored youth-led initiatives spanning HIV awareness, cancer outreach, and senior citizen support, before touring the Katutura Waste Buy-Back Centre - highlighting young Namibians' growing role in environmental sustainability.

Observers say the Junior Council model remains one of Africa's most effective frameworks for shaping the next generation of public servants.

The visit closed not with ceremony, but with a shared sense of responsibility - and a bold commitment to action.

Nedbank Namibia has stepped up as a key financial backer of the Financial Literacy Initiative (FLI), funding an ambitious nationwide roadshow bringing practical money management education to communities across the country.

The programme delivers hands-on workshops, one-on-one advisory sessions, and mobile learning stations - targeting real gaps in saving, budgeting, debt management, and digital finance skills.

Alarmingly, nearly a quarter of Namibians surveyed could not name a single financial product without prompting.

The roadshow launched in southern Namibia - spanning Oranjemund, Lüderitz, Keetmanshoop, and Mariental - before continuing westward, then north and east into early 2027.

Each stop includes community presentations, school activations, SME workshops, and radio outreach, supported by cultural performances to make financial concepts feel accessible, not intimidating.

The initiative directly supports Namibia's Financial Sector Transformation Strategy (2025–2035), which targets 85% financial literacy and 95% financial inclusion nationwide - proof that lasting economic change often begins one community conversation at a time.

“Young graduates section hits home. We leave university with degrees but zero idea how to manage money”

☀️ Partly Sunny & Warm Ahead

Windhoek can expect a mostly cloudy Thursday with a high of 29°C and a low of 16°C. There’s only a 10% chance of rain, with light winds around 13 km/h. Warmer, sunnier conditions are expected over the weekend. ☀️
Joke Of The Day

A tourist asked a Windhoek local, "How do you find out about all the best events and businesses here?"

The local smiled and said, "We don't Google it - we just wait for someone's aunt to mention it at a braai, and then it's automatically on everyone's calendar."

Interesting Facts

Windhoek punches well above its weight as a business and events hub in sub-Saharan Africa. Here are some facts that might surprise you:

  • A capital built for trade: Windhoek sits almost precisely at the geographic center of Namibia, a deliberate advantage that makes it the natural distribution hub for goods moving between South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Angola - all within a single-day truck haul.
  • The altitude advantage: At roughly 1,700 meters above sea level, Windhoek enjoys a mild, dry climate year-round, which event organizers specifically cite as a reason outdoor festivals and markets here face far fewer weather cancellations than in coastal African cities.
  • Africa's first paperless customs corridor: Namibia was among the first African nations to implement a fully digital single-window customs system, meaning businesses importing exhibition goods or event equipment into Windhoek face significantly faster clearance times than in many neighboring capitals.
  • A surprisingly dense craft economy: The informal and formal craft market sector around Windhoek generates enough turnover that it is tracked separately in national GDP figures - making local market events not just cultural showcases but measurable economic drivers.
  • German brewing heritage meets modern events: Windhoek's annual Oktoberfest is one of the largest beer festivals on the African continent, drawing visitors from over a dozen countries - a legacy of the city's German colonial-era brewing tradition that now fuels significant hospitality and tourism revenue each year.
