Windhoek City Kapana Festival Postponed to 2027 |
The Kapana Festival 2026 cancelled amid FMD outbreak, with a new date pending for the Kapana Festival 2027 |

One of Windhoek's most beloved cultural celebrations will not take place this year, as the Windhoek City Kapana Festival has officially been shelved until further notice.
The City of Windhoek announced the cancellation of the festival that had been set for 30 October 2026, citing the country's ongoing foot-and-mouth disease crisis as the driving force behind the difficult call.
With the Kapana Festival 2026 cancelled, the city confirmed that the event - built around the open-air grilling, selling, and communal enjoyment of meat - simply could not go ahead under the current veterinary restrictions.
The backdrop to this decision is a public health emergency of rare magnitude. Namibia confirmed its first foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in its primary commercial livestock zone in over 60 years, after 10 of 11 cattle samples collected on a farm in the Karasburg State Veterinary District tested positive in late September 2026.
The scale of the national response has been sweeping.
Authorities imposed a nationwide ban on livestock movement, suspended the slaughter of cloven-hoofed animals, and halted meat exports entirely - measures that made a meat-centred street festival logistically and ethically impossible to justify.
The City of Windhoek had already suspended the issuing of meat permits ahead of the festival announcement, and kapana vendors across the capital found themselves caught directly in the crossfire of containment efforts.
The ripple effect has been felt far beyond the festival grounds.
Livestock auctions across the country were halted, the livestock category of the Windhoek Agricultural and Livestock Show was scrapped, and Namibia's internationally recognised FMD-free status for its southern zone was revoked by the World Organisation for Animal Health - dealing a blow to export markets including China, South Africa, and the United States.
Officials say the Kapana Festival 2026 cancellation was a precautionary measure taken in solidarity with broader containment goals, and the city has expressed regret over the disruption to vendors and the wider community.
For the thousands of Windhoek residents who count the annual celebration as a cultural highlight, the news stings.
Looking ahead, Kapana Festival 2027 has been flagged as the next possible window, though no date has been locked in.
Whether that timeline holds will depend entirely on the veterinary situation on the ground as next year approaches.
The city has called on vendors, stakeholders, and the public to remain patient and cooperative as authorities work to bring the outbreak under control and restore normalcy to Namibia's meat industry - and to the streets of Windhoek. |
