Windhoek has ranked 8th in Africa and 411th globally in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026, which evaluated 1,000 cities across 27 indicators.
The Namibian capital's strongest performance came in the Environment category, where it scored an impressive 84.0 - outpacing many larger, more resource-rich African cities.
A Governance score of 63.4 further highlights Windhoek's reputation as a well-administered city in a region where institutional stability remains a real challenge.
The capital sits in notable company - ranked ahead of Rabat and Gaborone, while Cairo leads Africa at 255th globally, followed by Accra, Port Louis, and Nairobi.
City officials say the results validate efforts to build a sustainable, inclusive, and liveable urban environment, while also identifying areas still in need of investment and improved service delivery.
For Windhoek, the 2026 index is both a badge of recognition and a clear roadmap for the work still ahead. Read More... |

The 72nd Windhoek Industrial Show delivered one of its most energised editions yet, drawing roughly 200 exhibitors to the Windhoek Showgrounds from September 29 to October 3.
For the first time since the pandemic, exhibition space was fully booked - indoors and out.
Participants arrived from across Namibia and beyond, with businesses from Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, India, and South Africa reinforcing its reputation as a premier regional trade platform.
Sectors ranged from fashion and food processing to industrial equipment and professional services.
Despite a livestock exhibition cancellation due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in southern Namibia, commercial momentum held strong throughout.
First-time exhibitors, including a tailor from Ondangwa, reported real sales and meaningful connections no digital campaign could replicate.
Notably, seasoned exhibitors mentored students and aspiring entrepreneurs - an informal business school that may be the show's most undervalued contribution to Namibia's economy.
With demand already outpacing available space, the Windhoek Show Society faces growing pressure to expand for future editions. Read More... |

The streets of Single Quarters, Wanaheda, Greenwell Matongo, and Okuryangava have fallen unusually quiet, as Windhoek's beloved kapana trade grinds to a halt.
A foot and mouth disease outbreak - the first to strike Namibia's primary commercial livestock zone in sixty years - has forced city authorities to act decisively.
The City of Windhoek has suspended meat movement permits and banned all informal livestock slaughtering with immediate effect.
Farm and homestead slaughtering for commercial sale is prohibited, and meat from home-slaughtered animals cannot leave the premises under any circumstances.
Even private events require prior city approval before any slaughtering can proceed.
The virus breached Namibia's veterinary cordon fence, spreading into territory disease-free since 1964, with ten of eleven lab samples returning positive.
International markets have since suspended imports of Namibian beef, dealing a heavy blow to a red meat industry central to the national economy.
Livestock owners are urged to report suspected FMD signs immediately to the nearest state veterinarian. Read More... |

Bank Windhoek has retained its AA+(NA) long-term national scale issuer rating, reaffirmed by independent agency GCR Ratings - a result that carries genuine weight across the regional financial landscape.
The Stable Outlook signals sustained institutional confidence at a time when Namibia's economy continues navigating shifting pressures.
The short-term issuer rating of A1+(NA) was equally maintained, with the South African national scale long-term rating affirmed at A+(ZA).
Reviewers highlighted the bank's entrenched national presence, disciplined risk management, robust capitalisation, and sound liquidity - anchored by a Tier 1 capital ratio of 18.6% and a liquidity coverage ratio of 216.3%, well above regulatory thresholds.
The bank holds a commanding 31.5% share of Namibia's national lending market, supported by an expanding branch network and growing digital channels.
Managing Director James Chapman described the outcome as proof that trust - built through responsible decisions and ethical conduct - remains the bank's most enduring asset. Read More... |

In early August 2026, Windhoek hosted a landmark two-day restitution workshop, bringing together 32 voices from government, academia, civil society, and cultural institutions to examine one pressing question: what role does culture play in sustainable development?
The gathering marked the culmination of Namibia's implementation of the UNESCO Culture 2030 Indicators - a globally recognised framework of 22 thematic indicators linking culture to the broader 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, the National Arts Council of Namibia, and the City of Windhoek - in partnership with UNESCO - the event followed a data collection process launched in July 2025 and supported by the European Union.
Participants heard a detailed national cultural profile before turning to policy recommendations, exploring how cultural data can directly shape government decision-making.
Namibia is not merely joining a global conversation - it is helping to lead it. Read More... |

Windhoek is gearing up to host a pivotal cybersecurity conversation as the Namibian Cyber Security Summit opens on 13 October 2026 at The Weinberg Hotel in Klein Windhoek.
The timing is urgent.
Namibia recorded over 513,000 cyber vulnerabilities and more than 161,500 cyber events between April and June 2026 - a near 57% surge on the previous quarter.
Themed Mind the Gaps: AI, Governance and Cyber Defense, the summit tackles a hard truth - the greatest risks often hide between the tools organisations already own.
Sessions will explore AI's rapid reshaping of the threat landscape, where employees routinely use AI tools ahead of any formal policy.
Alliance partners Netskope, Mimecast, and CrowdStrike will contribute practical insights on building real-world cyber resilience.
Running from 08:00 to 15:00, the event targets technology, security, governance, and risk leaders - and includes a networking lunch and an iPad lucky draw. Read More... |

Namibia's Blood Transfusion Service is putting out an urgent call for donors ahead of a community blood drive at its Windhoek headquarters. The event runs from early morning until early afternoon, with organizers hoping to collect upward of 70 units - enough to make a real dent in the country's ongoing blood supply needs. A single donation, which takes well under half an hour, can benefit multiple patients at once - from trauma victims and surgical cases to mothers experiencing childbirth complications and people managing cancer or blood disorders. Donors are encouraged to bring someone along rather than come alone, and free transport can be arranged for those who need a ride. Eligible donors should be between 16 and 65 years old, weigh at least 50 kilograms, and be in good general health. Eat a proper meal a few hours before arriving, stay well hydrated, and plan for a restful day afterward. Every donor goes home with a small gift - a modest thank-you for what could amount to a lifesaving act. |
