Windhoek is set to host the International Labour Organization's 15th African Regional Meeting from December 2 to 4, 2026 - one of the most significant gatherings of labour, government, and employer representatives the continent has seen.

Delegates will tackle three forces reshaping African work: youth demographic pressures, digital transformation and AI, and the green climate transition.

ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo will present a landmark report urging African nations to actively direct these shifts - with social justice as the guiding compass.

The meeting will also review commitments under the Abidjan Declaration from 2019 and chart renewed continental priorities.

Houngbo recently met with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and senior ministers, with youth employment front and centre in discussions.

All plenary sessions will be publicly accessible online, broadening the conversation well beyond Windhoek's walls.

Windhoek is reaffirming its role as Namibia's automotive engine, with September new vehicle registrations reaching 1 498 units - a 14.9% year-on-year jump worth roughly one billion Namibian dollars.

Windhoek accounted for 64% of all national registrations, while passenger vehicles surged 18.9% to 655 units - the fastest monthly pace recorded this year.

Affordability is reshaping buying decisions, with Chinese models averaging N$511 000 increasingly challenging established brands priced near N$615 000.

Light commercial vehicles posted a three-month high of 746 units, up 13.5% year-on-year. The Toyota Hilux dominated with 359 units, though its segment share dipped from 56% to 48% as the Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max gained ground.

Dealer channel sales of 1 476 units marked the strongest single month since December 2015, placing the current recovery on genuinely historic footing.

On a rolling 12-month basis, the market has reached 15 901 units - the highest tally since early 2017 and more than double the 2020 trough.

Windhoek's Western Bypass is set for a major safety upgrade, with the government committing N$70 million toward two pedestrian bridges along one of the capital's most dangerous roads.

Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi confirmed in the National Assembly that designs are finalised, with contractors expected on site between late November and December.

At roughly N$35 million per structure, the price tag has sparked debate, with opposition members demanding a full breakdown of how taxpayer funds will be spent.

The bridges respond to years of deadly pedestrian incidents along the high-speed corridor, which cuts through densely populated parts of Windhoek - forcing residents to dodge fast-moving traffic daily.

Since speed humps were introduced as an interim measure, zero pedestrian crash incidents have been recorded along the affected stretch - a figure Nekundi cited firmly in defence of the calming infrastructure.

Looking ahead, the minister hinted at three to four additional bridges near the Windhoek Country Club Resort corridor under consideration for the next financial year - signalling a broader, long-term vision for pedestrian safety across the city.

Likius Nande claimed the overall best gross title at the 2026 Ongos Windhoek Open, becoming the only player among 103 competitors to finish under par across the three-round event held at Windhoek Golf Club.

His total of 215 - rounds of 72, 71, and 72 - secured the title by three strokes over Namibia's top-ranked junior, Sam Nel, whose promising second-round 69 couldn't offset a closing 76.

The tournament, contested on 17 and 18 October, drew competitors from across Namibia and South Africa, with junior golfers featuring prominently throughout.

Brutal heat and demanding greens tested every player, yet the standard remained high. Simon Heinrich took overall best net honours with 218, while Anecia Le Grange dominated the ladies' division with a two-round gross total of 172.

Nande himself called the Ongos Windhoek Open the finest tournament in the country - a fitting tribute to an event cementing its reputation as one of Namibia's premier amateur competitions.

In Windhoek, one craftsman is quietly redefining what a skilled tradesperson can be.

Festus Nande Natangwe is a welder, structural builder, and safari vehicle fabricator - all in one.

At the core of his work is custom safari vehicle fabrication, where precision engineering meets raw creative instinct.

With Namibia's tourism sector projected to generate N$4.6 billion in 2025, demand for purpose-built game viewers is rising fast - and Natangwe is meeting it, one conversion at a time.

His game viewer builds are engineered for Namibia's harshest terrain, finished to client specification, and shaped by a design instinct that makes each vehicle genuinely distinctive.

Beyond safari work, he fabricates security gates, custom doors, and metal structures, and takes on full residential construction projects - a rare combination for a single operator.

Self-taught and relentlessly practical, Natangwe treats welding, construction, and fabrication as overlapping disciplines united by one standard: accountability to the finished result.

Lodges, tour operators, and private clients can reach Festus Nande Natangwe at 081 358 2915.

Windhoek is cementing its role as a national leader in local governance, with a high-profile review reaffirming its five-year bilateral agreement with the Okongo Village Council - a partnership first signed in 2022 and now extended through 2027.

Representatives from the Ohangwena Region travelled to the capital to assess progress and sharpen delivery strategies under their Memorandum of Understanding.

Key focus areas include urban planning, financial management, economic development, and solid waste management - a broad mandate reflecting the real demands of running a growing local authority.

Okongo has already launched its first-ever strategic plan, aligned with National Development Plan Six - a milestone signalling genuine institutional growth.

Windhoek's acting head urged Okongo leaders to prioritise just three immediate action areas, with street lighting and public green spaces highlighted as high-impact starting points.

For smaller councils like Okongo, access to Windhoek's decades of urban expertise could prove genuinely transformative.

Cricket fans across Namibia have every reason to be excited as the country prepares to host a historic five-match ODI series between the Namibia Eagles and Ireland, running from 22 October to 1 November.

The two nations have never met in men's ODI cricket - making every ball bowled a piece of history.

Matches will be held at the HP Oval and the brand-new FNB Namibia Cricket Ground, Namibia's first fully equipped international stadium, which opened to international cricket weeks ago with a stunning upset victory over South Africa.

Ireland arrive ranked 12th globally, led by experienced opener Paul Stirling, while Namibia sit 16th - though recent form suggests the gap is rapidly narrowing.

Beyond the rivalry, the series carries real long-term weight - both teams are eyeing the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, co-hosted by South Africa and Namibia.

For Namibian cricket, this is as big and as bold as it gets.

Interesting Facts

Windhoek punches well above its weight as a business and events hub — here are some lesser-known reasons why:

  • A capital city with no traffic lights for decades: Windhoek operated almost entirely on roundabouts well into the modern era, making it one of the few capital cities in the world to manage urban traffic flow without conventional signal systems — a quirk that still shapes how the city centre is laid out for events and street markets today.
  • The oldest street market tradition in southern Africa: The Namibian open-air market culture around Independence Avenue predates formal retail chains in the region, with informal traders holding documented pitches in the same spots for multiple generations — giving local businesses a uniquely loyal, embedded customer base.
  • Home to Africa's highest concentration of registered craft breweries per capita: Windhoek's German colonial heritage seeded a brewing culture so robust that Namibia now boasts more craft and traditional breweries relative to its population than almost any other African nation — making food-and-drink events here unusually competitive and vibrant.
  • The Windhoek Karneval (WIKA) predates most European revival carnivals: Started in 1954, WIKA has run almost uninterrupted for over 70 years, making it one of the longest-continuously-running carnival events in the Southern Hemisphere and a proven anchor for local hospitality businesses each autumn.
  • Windhoek sits at over 1,600 metres above sea level: This elevation means consistently mild temperatures year-round, giving outdoor event organisers and business owners a reliable climate advantage that coastal or lowland African cities simply cannot match.
